In vehicles with 42RH/RE, 46RH/RE or 47RH/RE transmissions, it is common for the overdrive section to suffer from poor lube oil control resulting in burnt planetaries and failed bushings. One area of weakness is the intermediate shaft. Shafts are often contaminated and cleaning is difficult as it leaves the shaft unrepairable. Sonnax now offers a pilot and plug kit 22171-02K to allow the shaft to be cleaned, and equally important, it improves lube control. The Sonnax pilot has a smaller orifice resulting in more lube flow to the bushings and planetaries. The use of the Sonnax pilot also allows the salvage or conversion of early small diameter pilot A727 shafts to later, large diameter applications. The OEM plug was generally not removed because replacements were not available or difficult to find. The Sonnax endplug now allows the shaft to be cleaned, preventing post-rebuild contamination.
