Low line pressure on heavy-duty applications of Ford AOD-E and 4R70W transmissions results in forward clutch failure due to slippage. In 1996, Ford made a change to both the pressure regulator valve and valve body casting. The valve spool locations were changed slightly, and the spool diameter controlling line to converter feed was stepped. This spool step, in conjunction with regulating notches added to the valve body casting, allows converter feed to be regulated. Due to these OEM modifications, installation of a stronger spring without a specially modified regulator valve will result in restriction of converter charge and converter release circuits. This may cause the engine to stall or surge at an idle or create converter shudder. The Sonnax kit 76948-12K contains a properly metered pressure regulator valve and the stronger spring, to work on the ’96 and later valve bodies.
